Case studies

Harpen district heating

Residents in around 20 Czech towns and cities will now have reliable heating and hot water as a result of an EBRD loan to German utility Harpen CR in 2000. The €17 million loan, the Bank's first in the Czech Republic's district heating sector, is enabling the refurbishment of a number of district heating plants and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Brno waste-water treatment plant upgrading

Half a million residents in and around the Czech Republic's second-largest city are benefiting from the EBRD's support of the Brno waste-water treatment plant. The investment, made in conjunction with EU Phare, has enabled the enlargement and upgrade of the plant.

The financing consisted of a €42.5 million long-term EBRD loan and €14 million from EU Phare, provided in 1999. In providing the loan, the EBRD became the first international financial institution to finance a municipal water and sewerage company without a full guarantee from the municipality.
