€36 million EBRD loan helped Tashkent Airport
EBRD President attends opening of international passenger terminal
Jean Lemierre, President of the EBRD today attended the inauguration of the passenger terminal at Tashkent International Airport, which was modernised using EBRD finance and is now welcoming a growing number of international passengers.
Mr Lemierre said Tashkent Airport is one of the main airports in Central Asia and the gateway to Uzbekistan. He said it is the first contact business people and tourists have with the country, and it is important this leaves a good impression. "This inauguration is the result of joint cooperation and partnership between the EBRD and the Republic of Uzbekistan, and I look forward to building on this partnership," he added.
The EBRD provided €36 million in 1998 to support the upgrading of taxiways -- completed earlier this year -- and the refurbishment of the passenger terminal. The work will bring the airport in line with international standards.
