Project description and objectives:
|
In 2006 the Bank approved a loan of USD 150M to Ekoenergiya for the construction of two 151.5 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) using waste gases from the Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works and from Alchevsk Coke Works.
The new loan would finance a third 151.5 MW CCGT unit using the remaining waste gases and selling part of the electricity to the national grid. The new CCGT plant will be adjacent to the existing steel plant and, after the planned wider modernization of the steel plant, will utilise process off-gases from the coke ovens, converters, and blast furnaces. Natural gas will not be required for routine operation of the CCGT plant. The plant will utilize waste gases, which otherwise would have to be flared, thereby reducing the environmental impact of the plant. The CCGT will be designed to meet all Ukrainian and EU environmental standards, inclusive of European Union Integrated Pollution, Prevention and Control (“IPPC”) and Large Combustion Plant Directive (“LCDP”) requirements.
