Emergency repair of Khoujand Airport’s unsafe runway. The project aims to maintain the link between the north and south of Tajikistan. The restructuring technical cooperation (TC) component is likely to initiate potential follow-up investments.
The project aims to:
- maintain the economic link between the north and the south of Tajikistan by keeping Khoujand airport open;
- prepare for a rationalisation of the TSA and the air navigation sector through a TC restructuring study; and
- develop technical cooperation for implementation and monitoring consultancy.

Transition
impact:
|
The project will increase the government’s effectiveness at policy formation and air transport regulation. It will promote competition, and introduce economic and financial transparency to the air transport sector while allowing for greater efficiency in resource allocation. It will also allow Khoujand airport to stay open and to considerably increase operational safety. In addition, it will provide a safe and reliable transport link between the north and the south and with the rest of the world, will facilitate workforce mobility and foster the export-oriented industries in Khoujand.

The borrower is the Republic of Tajikistan and the executing agency is the Tajikistan State Air Company (TSA), which includes the airport.

finance:

A sovereign loan of up to US$ 3 million (EUR 2.5 million) and grant funding of up to US$ 2.5 million (EUR 2.08 million) from the Japan Fund for Post Conflict Support.

Total project cost:
|
Up to US$ 5.5 million (EUR 4.6 million).

Environmental impact:
|
The project will bring about significant safety improvements.

Technical
cooperation:
|
TC of up to US$ 350,000 (EUR 290,000) for the restructuring of TSA.
