EBRD increases support for FYR Macedonia telecommunications [Press Release]

Project description
and objectives:

Emergency extension of the mobile GSM network, which has been overwhelmed by increasing demand, and modernisation of Makedonski Telekomunikacii's information system to allow for more efficient operation.

The project aims to:

  • respond to the urgent, increasing need for communications, by doubling the capacity of MT's GSM network to 70,000 subscribers; and
  • increase MT efficiency and quality of service through a gradual implementation of a new information system.

Transition impact:

The loan contains significant incentives for the privatisation of MT and for improved corporate governance. MT's privatisation will be one of the first and most visible privatisations of the infrastructure in the country.

The client:

Makedonski Telekomunikacii (MT) is a state-owned joint-stock company, which provides basic telecommunications services (local, long distance and international) as well as data and mobile services in FYR Macedonia. MT was established in March 1997 as a result of the divestiture of the former PTT Macedonia into Macedonian Posts and MT.

EBRD finance:

EUR 18.77 million senior corporate loan to MT.

Total project cost:

EUR 18.92 million.

Environmental impact:

This project was screened as B/0, requiring an environmental analysis. The analysis did not reveal any major environmental, health and safety or non-compliance issues.

Technical
cooperation:
