Abstract

Once referred to as the “breadbasket of Europe”, the EBRD’s region currently accounts for around 20 per cent of the world’s potential arable land. It has top-quality soils and good potential for productivity gains when compared with more developed economies.

The EBRD is the biggest single investor in the agribusiness sector in the transition region. The Bank’s involvement in the sector spans all activities throughout the production chain, from farming, processing and trading to food packaging, distribution and retail.
