Abstract
The Environmental Policy is a key document of the Bank which details the commitments of the agreement establishing the Bank particularly for the "promotion of environmentally sound and sustainable development". The 1996 Environmental Policy and Procedures has been revised in order to reaffirm and strengthen these commitments and also to enhance good governance. As part of the revision process, the Bank undertook an extensive public consultation exercise which included, inter alia, the release of the draft policy for over 75 days in both English and Russian; consultation workshops in London, Szentendre, Moscow and Baku; client surveys; and discussions with the Bank's Environmental Council ENVAC. As a result of this exercise, the Bank received extensive comments which have significantly aided the policy review.
